The Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Switch 2 Edition is now available digitally with upgraded image quality, a 60 FPS target, and several additions that go beyond a basic performance patch. Nintendo lists output of up to 4K in TV mode and Full HD in handheld mode, while the new content includes the Rare Blade MOMO, the Merc Assault battle mode, and additional outfit designs for Pyra and Mythra.
Players who already own the original Nintendo Switch release can buy the separate $9.99 upgrade pack. A complete digital version launched on July 30, 2026, while Nintendo lists the physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for October 1.
What the Switch 2 Edition changes
Nintendo says the main game runs at 60 frames per second in both supported play configurations. TV mode can output at up to 4K resolution when connected to a compatible display, while handheld mode uses Full HD output.
The official product page notes that frame rates are capped at 60 FPS for 4K output. Nintendo has not published detailed frame-time testing or a breakdown of whether resolution changes dynamically during demanding scenes, so the official specifications establish the target rather than providing an independent performance benchmark.
Even so, the combination of higher output resolution and a smoother frame rate is the most immediately visible change for returning players. The upgrade applies across the large environments, combat encounters, and story sequences that make up the main adventure.
MOMO and Merc Assault add new playable content
The Switch 2 Edition also introduces MOMO, a new Rare Blade with two forms. Changing between those forms alters both her appearance and elemental affinity, and Nintendo says she has a dedicated quest for players to complete.
Merc Assault expands the existing mercenary system into an action battle mode. Players can choose as many as six Blades for a Merc Mission, move and fight while controlling them directly, and swap freely between the selected characters. Combining Blade Specials is presented as an important part of the mode’s combat system.
Pyra and Mythra receive new outfit designs as well. Nintendo says the outfits appear during normal exploration and in cutscenes, rather than being limited to a separate menu or isolated activity.
How the upgrade pack and physical release work
There are two purchasing paths. Existing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 owners can retain their original game and buy the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack for $9.99. The upgrade provides the visual improvements and additional Switch 2 Edition content, but the original full game is required.
New players can instead purchase the complete Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo’s digital product page lists July 30 as its release date, meaning that version is available now. The separately listed physical copy has an October 1, 2026 release date and is not part of the current digital launch.
This distinction matters because Nintendo’s announcement broadly describes the Switch 2 Edition as available, while the store separates the already released digital product from the later physical package.
Torna receives its own Switch 2 improvements
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country is also receiving enhanced output on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists 4K resolution at 60 FPS in TV mode and 1080p at 60 FPS in handheld mode.
The standalone digital and physical versions of Torna receive this through a free update. Players who access Torna as part of the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass instead need the main game’s Nintendo Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack to use the enhanced Switch 2 output.
Torna does not receive the MOMO, Merc Assault, or Pyra and Mythra content described for the main Switch 2 Edition. Its confirmed changes focus on resolution and frame rate.
What players should know before upgrading
For existing owners, the $9.99 upgrade pack is the direct route to the new version. It combines the visual and frame-rate improvements with content that changes how some Blades can be used, which gives the package more scope than a resolution-only update.
Players buying a new copy should check which format they want. The digital Switch 2 Edition is available now, but the physical release remains scheduled for October 1. A compatible 4K display is also required for the highest TV output; handheld play uses Full HD instead.
The official pages confirm the target resolutions, frame rate, new Blade, battle mode, outfits, purchasing paths, and release dates. They do not provide comparative loading measurements or detailed performance analysis, so those areas will require testing beyond Nintendo’s published specifications.
