SEGA has outlined a new wave of free content for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, adding three playable characters over the coming months alongside a set of new music tracks for the game’s jukebox. The rollout begins today with Classic Sonic, followed by Axel in August and Amigo in September.
The update schedule gives the racing game a steady stream of additions rather than a single content drop. Each character comes with an exclusive vehicle, and the music update brings nine songs drawn from across SEGA’s wider library. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is already available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Free character updates run from June through September
The first addition is Classic Sonic, arriving on June 23, 2026 as a playable character with an exclusive vehicle. SEGA then plans to add Axel from the Crazy Taxi series in August 2026, also paired with a unique vehicle. The final announced character is Amigo from Samba de Amigo, scheduled for September 2026 with another exclusive vehicle.
These updates extend the game’s roster with characters from different parts of SEGA’s history. Classic Sonic brings a familiar version of the franchise’s mascot, while Axel and Amigo pull from series that have been part of SEGA’s broader identity for years. For players, the practical takeaway is that the game’s lineup will keep expanding without requiring a paid character purchase for these additions.
Nine new songs are also coming to the jukebox
Alongside the character updates, nine new songs are being added to the in-game jukebox. The list includes music from Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure, Akadoko & Kimishine Ai no Densetsu CD, the Sonic the Hedgehog 35th anniversary, Space Channel 5, and Burning Rangers.
- “Looting the Louvre” by Naofumi Hataya
- “Theme of Phantom R” by Tomoya Ohtani
- “Akadoko” by Naofumi Hataya
- “Orpheus in the Underworld” by Naofumi Hataya
- “Kimishine” by Naofumi Hataya
- “Speed Is My Life” by Jun Senoue and Nathan Sharp
- “space channel 5: getting the truth” by Kenichi Tokoi
- “Go! Go! Cheerleader!” by SEGA Sound Team
- “Burning Hearts” by Naofumi Hataya and Takenobu Mitsuyoshi
The music additions matter because they broaden the game’s audio library beyond the racing soundtrack itself. For players who spend time in the jukebox or like customizing the game’s presentation, these tracks add more variety and more SEGA crossover material to the package.
Free characters give the roster more variety
Free content updates can help keep a racing game active after launch, especially when they add recognizable characters and music tied to other SEGA series. In this case, the additions are spread across several months, which gives players a reason to return periodically rather than only when a major expansion lands.
The inclusion of exclusive vehicles for each character also suggests the updates are not limited to cosmetic roster changes. New vehicles can affect how players approach races, even if the exact performance details are not part of the announcement. For fans of SEGA’s legacy characters, the update also reinforces the game’s crossover identity.
More Sonic Racing updates are scheduled through September
The current announcement covers the next three character drops and the new jukebox tracks, but it does not indicate whether more free character updates are planned after September. For now, the key dates are clear: Classic Sonic on June 23, Axel in August, and Amigo in September.
Players on all supported platforms can access the game now, and the new content will arrive as part of the ongoing update schedule. SEGA has also released a new trailer for the update, which should provide a closer look at the additions as they roll out.
