Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access Starts 20 October With Operator Recovery

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access starts 20 October. Activision explains missing Operators, recovery costs, 18 Trait Points, crafting and the FOB.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 opens DMZ Early Access on 20 October 2026 for eligible digital preorders, three days before the full launch. Operators killed during a deployment become missing in action (MIA) and lose their equipment. They can be recovered with DMZ Cash, while XP earned during the failed deployment still counts toward DMZ Player progression.

DMZ has a separate 70-level progression track alongside Modern Warfare 4’s standard Level 1–55 system. XP earned in DMZ advances both tracks, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP do not increase the DMZ level.

Digital Preorders Unlock DMZ Early Access

Campaign Early Access starts on 16 October, DMZ follows on 20 October, and Modern Warfare 4 launches in full on 23 October. The full launch is also listed in GTR’s release calendar.

Both the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition qualify when purchased digitally. Activision lists PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Battle.net and Nintendo Switch 2. Access times may vary by region and platform; the 9 October briefing does not give a universal start hour.

PC players can also check Modern Warfare 4's official hardware requirements in GTR's Specs tracker. Its 90 FPS High target applies to Multiplayer, not a verified DMZ benchmark.

The earlier campaign window is covered in GTR’s Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access guide.

MIA Recovery, Dog Tags and Operator Prestige

Each Active Duty Operator levels up a separate Dog Tag through successful extractions. Progression awards up to 18 Trait Points, spent across Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist. Activision lists 66 Traits in total, but one Operator cannot unlock them all in a single progression cycle.

An Operator eliminated before extraction becomes MIA and cannot deploy again until recovered. Spending DMZ Cash restores that Operator with their Traits intact but without equipment. Recovery costs rise with the number of Trait Points earned. Players can dismiss the Operator and start again instead.

At 18 Trait Points, an Operator who is not MIA can enter optional DMZ Prestige. The first Prestige consumes rare equipment and 200,000 DMZ Cash, resets normal Traits and grants one random permanent Prestige Trait. The second and third Prestiges require 300,000 and 500,000 DMZ Cash respectively, plus higher-rarity gear. An Operator can hold up to three permanent Prestige Traits. These remain tied to that Operator even if they are dismissed or moved to another Active Duty slot.

FOB Crafting, Weapon Manuals and Vault Edition Gear

Between matches, the Forward Operating Base (FOB) holds the player’s Stash, Operator management, missions and upgrades. Equipment stored in the Stash is shared across Active Duty Operators, so a successful supply run can help prepare a different specialist for the next operation.

The 3D Printer unlocks at DMZ Player Level 2 and uses four Resource types—Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals—plus specific ingredients looted in Hajin. The Vendor opens at Level 5, Gunsmith at Level 10 and Dog Tag Case at Level 20. Finding a weapon is not the same as unlocking repeat purchases: to buy its base version through the Gunsmith, players must first extract with the relevant Weapon Manual.

Standard Digital Edition players start with two Active Duty Operator slots and can unlock a third through DMZ progression. Vault Edition buyers start with three and receive a Deployment Kit containing two each of Weapon Insurance Contracts, Operator Rescue Beacons, Fulton Drop Markers, Medium Backpacks and 2-Plate Carriers.

DMZ Missions, Wanted Bounties and Insertion Costs

Story Missions follow the campaign-linked conflict in Hajin, while completed Dynamic Operations award DMZ Cash, XP and Supply Drops of increasing rarity. Free Roam lets players gather crafting ingredients or hunt bounties without selecting a mission first.

Killing four rival Operators across deployments puts a player on the Wanted list and alerts nearby Operators. Other players can spend DMZ Cash on location intel at Bounty Stations, then claim rewards by extracting with the Wanted target’s Dog Tag.

For Dynamic Operations and Free Roam, ground insertion is free. Vehicle insertions cost 5,000 DMZ Cash for a Polaris Dagor A1, 25,000 for an LTV and 50,000 for a helicopter. A 100,000-Cash cargo plane lets a squad choose a specific drop location. These are in-game currency costs, not listed direct real-money purchase prices.
