Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access begins Friday, October 16, giving eligible digital preorder customers one week with the story before the full game launches on October 23. Activision has now defined the qualifying editions and platforms, so access is no longer a matter of guessing from the usual Call of Duty release pattern.
The benefit applies to digital preorders or prepurchases of the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition. Physical copies are not included in the official eligibility language, and the campaign window should not be confused with multiplayer or beta access.
Who qualifies for Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access
Activision says players must digitally preorder or prepurchase an eligible edition. Both the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition qualify, which means the more expensive package is not required solely for Campaign Early Access.
The entitlement is attached to the digital purchase, so players should use the same platform account that owns the game. Anyone buying through a retailer should check whether the order delivers a platform-specific digital license or a physical product; the official announcement only promises early campaign access for digital editions.
Activision also notes that actual start times and platform availability can be affected by outages, regional timing and platform submission changes. October 16 is the confirmed start date, but the exact hour has not been stated in the announcement.
Campaign Early Access covers Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Switch 2
The eligible platform list includes Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Modern Warfare 4 is being developed natively for Switch 2 by Infinity Ward and Digital Legends rather than arriving as a cloud-only version.
That gap has now closed for Nintendo Switch 2. Activision opened preorders on August 26, with both the digital Standard Edition and digital Vault Edition available through the Nintendo eShop. Digital Switch 2 preorders include full Campaign Early Access starting October 16, one week before Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23.
This remains separate from the Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer beta. The current beta includes the Campaign mission “Entrenched,” giving players an early look at the story, but it is not the full campaign. Eligible digital preorders unlock the complete Campaign Early Access period on October 16; Multiplayer and the rest of Modern Warfare 4 launch on October 23.
The campaign follows Private Park and Captain Price
Modern Warfare 4 places players in the Korean Peninsula conflict introduced in Activision’s campaign outline. Private Park, a young South Korean soldier entering live combat with his squad, is caught in a North Korean invasion that expands from a routine mission into large-scale urban fighting and counteroffensives.
Captain Price operates on a separate track outside the system he previously served. His pursuit of revenge leads toward a weapon capable of changing the balance of the conflict, connecting covert operations and uneasy alliances with Park’s front-line campaign.
Activision describes the story as a mix of large battles, covert missions, combined-arms warfare and cinematic set pieces. Campaign Early Access is useful for players who want to complete that story before multiplayer opens, but it is still the same campaign included in the full game rather than a separate preorder chapter.
What to check before October 16
Players should confirm the edition and owning account first, then watch the relevant platform store for preload information. Activision has not announced a universal Campaign Early Access preload date, install size or exact October 16 start time, so those details should not be assumed in advance.
The October 16 and October 23 dates are tracked in GTR’s game release calendar. If Activision changes the start time, platform list or preload plan, those operational details can be added to this guide without changing its stable URL.
