Ghost Recon Wildlands Last Rites is now available as a free major update, bringing a new narrative mission to Ubisoft’s 2017 open-world shooter alongside current-generation console upgrades, broader gameplay customization, and the limited-time return of the Predator crossover mission. Ubisoft released the update as part of Ghost Recon’s 25th-anniversary celebrations.
The update gives returning players several reasons to revisit Bolivia rather than treating Last Rites as a small anniversary patch. The headline changes combine new story content with technical improvements and systems that can make the existing campaign more demanding or more immersive.
What the Last Rites update adds
Ubisoft describes Last Rites as a free major update for Ghost Recon Wildlands. The standalone, story-driven mission sends the Ghosts into territory controlled by Los Penitentes, a fanatical cult led by the masked La Llorona. Ubisoft says the mission can be launched directly from the main menu without completing the original campaign first.
That makes the new content relatively easy to access for returning players who may not have an old save ready. It also separates the anniversary mission from the original progression path, so the update can function as a standalone reason to reinstall the game.
Last Rites also expands the pool of available customization items. VGC reports that hundreds of items are now free, including rewards that were no longer obtainable, previously unreleased camouflage options, items tied to the old Mercenaries mode, and new 25th-anniversary gear.
Wildlands gets 4K and 60 FPS support on current consoles
The headline technical change is support for 4K output and 60 FPS gameplay on current-generation consoles. Ubisoft presents the upgrade as one of the community’s most requested improvements, with smoother performance and improved responsiveness intended to modernize the feel of Wildlands on newer hardware.
That matters for a game built around long-distance aiming, vehicle movement and frequent transitions between stealth and direct combat. A 60 FPS target can make camera movement and input feel more immediate, while the higher output resolution is especially useful in the large outdoor environments that define Wildlands.
Ubisoft has not published the kind of detailed frame-time analysis needed to judge how consistently the console versions hold those targets in every scenario. The official announcement establishes the supported presentation modes; independent testing will still be needed for a full performance assessment.
New options let players reshape the PvE experience
Last Rites also adds a wider set of gameplay customization controls. According to VGC’s report on Ubisoft’s anniversary presentation, players can bring features associated with Ghost Mode into other PvE play, including authentic reloading, friendly fire and tighter weapon limits.
Players can also adjust the time of day and weather, change difficulty presets, and remove visual assistance such as highlighted-item glows, throwable trajectory previews and some interface-linked audio cues. These options give experienced players more control over how much information the game exposes during a mission.
The result is broader than a graphics patch. A group can keep the familiar Wildlands structure while stripping away assistance and increasing the consequences of mistakes, or use only selected options without committing to Ghost Mode’s full rule set.
The Predator mission returns for a limited time
The update also restores The Jungle Moved, the Predator crossover mission first released in December 2017. Ubisoft removed it in December 2020 after the original licensing arrangement ended. In its 25th-anniversary announcement, Ubisoft says the Predator event has returned for a limited time, although it has not announced an end date.
That makes the return significant for players who missed the original event, but it should not be treated as permanent content. Anyone specifically returning for Predator should prioritize the mission while it is available.
What returning players should know
Last Rites is a free update rather than a separate paid expansion and is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC. The 4K/60 FPS presentation targets current-generation systems and PC, while the new mission and broader gameplay changes reach the wider platform lineup.
For PS5 and Xbox Series X|S owners, the 4K and 60 FPS support is likely to be the most immediate difference. For players already satisfied with performance, the La Llorona mission, more configurable PvE rules, returning Predator content and newly unlocked items provide the stronger gameplay reasons to return.
Ubisoft’s announcement confirms the anniversary update and its main features, while VGC provides additional detail from the 25th-anniversary presentation. The remaining question is how the upgraded console versions perform under sustained load, something that requires testing beyond the published specifications.
