Blizzard has pushed a Diablo IV hotfix that addresses a startup crash on Steam Deck and an occasional crash in the in-game shop, closing out a problem that had affected SteamOS and Linux players after the game’s latest season update. The fix arrived in hotfix 3, version 3.1.0c, on July 10, 2026, and it matters most for anyone running Diablo IV through Steam on SteamOS or Linux via Proton.
The practical change is simple: players who were blocked at launch on Steam Deck should now be able to start the game normally again, and the shop crash should be less likely to interrupt play. Blizzard’s forum note lists the update under Battle.net and Steam bug fixes, which is important because it means the correction is no longer just a workaround at the compatibility layer. Valve had already issued a Proton Hotfix workaround, while Blizzard’s own patch addresses the underlying game-side crash.
Diablo IV 3.1.0c targets Steam Deck startup and shop crashes
Hotfix 3 is the key update here. Blizzard says it fixed a crash that happened on Steam Deck startup and another crash that could occur in the in-game shop. Those are the only two fixes called out in the July 10 note, but they are the ones Linux and Steam Deck players were waiting for after the season update introduced stability problems.
For SteamOS users, the important part is that Blizzard has now addressed the startup crash in the game itself, reducing reliance on the earlier Proton-side workaround.
Valve’s Proton workaround is no longer the only path
Before Blizzard’s hotfix, Valve had already issued a Proton-side fix to help players get around the startup crash. That helped keep Diablo IV playable, but it also meant the game’s stability on Linux was being patched from the compatibility layer rather than from the game itself. Blizzard’s update changes that balance.
In practical terms, Diablo IV now has an official game-side fix for the Steam Deck startup crash. GamingOnLinux also reported successful post-hotfix testing with Proton 11, though results can still vary by system and Proton configuration.
Battle.net and Steam fixes follow an earlier security update
The July 10 patch is the latest in a short run of Diablo IV updates. Blizzard also issued hotfix 2 on July 1, 2026, which deployed a security update to Battle.net. Hotfix 1, dated June 30, 2026, adjusted Uber Mephisto’s on-kill XP to match other lair bosses and added experience orbs to Uber Mephisto’s Hoard.
Blizzard is now addressing the SteamOS/Linux startup crash directly. If Diablo IV had been failing on startup or misbehaving in the shop on Steam Deck, install the July 10 hotfix before changing Proton versions or trying additional compatibility workarounds.
