Grand Theft Auto VI needs up to 212GB of free space, and pre-loading now opens on Tuesday, November 10, two days earlier than the November 12 date Rockstar gave when pre-orders started. The game itself still unlocks on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The two consoles start on different clocks. Digital PS5 pre-loads start at midnight local time, so New Zealand gets the download bar first and the Americas get it last. Xbox Series X|S starts everywhere at once, at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10:
- UK and Ireland: midnight, November 10
- Central Europe: 1 a.m., November 10
- Eastern Europe: 2 a.m., November 10
- US East Coast: 7 p.m., Monday, November 9
- US West Coast: 4 p.m., Monday, November 9
Boxed copies still arrive on November 12
The new date covers digital orders. In its November 3 Newswire post, Rockstar says code-in-box editions for both consoles “should be available from retailers beginning November 12.” The box holds a download code, not a disc, so a physical copy means the same 212GB download with a two-day handicap.
Some early reports said boxed copies would also hit shelves on November 10. Rockstar’s post lists November 12 for retail, and that is the date to plan around unless your store tells you otherwise.
How much space GTA 6 takes on each console
Sony’s PlayStation Blog tells PS5 owners to clear “a minimum of 212GB.” Rockstar’s wording, “up to 212 GB depending on your device,” leaves room for a smaller Xbox file, but neither Rockstar nor Microsoft has published a separate Xbox figure.
Here is what 212GB means against the free space each console has for games out of the box:
| Console | Usable storage | Share taken by 212GB |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 (825GB, 2020 model) | About 667GB | About 32% |
| PS5 Slim (1TB) | About 848GB | 25% |
| PS5 Pro (2TB) | About 1.89TB | About 11% |
| Xbox Series X (1TB) | About 802GB | About 26% |
| Xbox Series S (512GB) | About 364GB | About 58% |
On a launch PS5, that is almost a third of the drive. The Series S is the tight one: if its file lands anywhere near the ceiling, GTA 6 alone takes more than half of the space a 512GB model has for games. The 1TB Series S is in a much better spot. On PS5 the fix is an M.2 SSD; on Xbox Series X|S it is a storage expansion card. Both need to be in place before November 10 if you want the full nine days.
How long 212GB takes to download
GTR calculation, at a steady line speed with nothing else downloading:
- 50 Mbps: about 9 hours 25 minutes
- 100 Mbps: about 4 hours 45 minutes
- 300 Mbps: about 1 hour 35 minutes
- 1 Gbps: about 28 minutes
Real downloads run slower, especially when millions of consoles hit the same servers in the same hour, and a launch-day patch can add more on November 19. On a fast connection the extra two days barely matter. On a 50 Mbps line the download takes most of a working day, so a late start leaves little room for a retry or a patch.
Pre-loading is not early access. The files stay locked until November 19, whichever console or edition you bought. PlayStation Store listings point to a midnight local-time unlock, but Rockstar has not announced a launch time itself.
What Rockstar adds on launch day
Rockstar has not explained why it moved the date. With pre-orders already in the millions, spreading the downloads over nine days instead of seven looks like a sensible way to keep launch-week traffic down.
On November 19, Rockstar says it will put a printable Grand Theft Auto VI cover art poster and a map of Leonida on the official site as free downloads. The launch itself stays on the date in our release Calendar: November 19, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only.
