S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s free Update 2.1, The Zone Lookout, lets players see roaming A-Life NPCs farther away and pay squad leaders for trips through the Zone. Released on 26 October 2026, it pairs those additions with changes to binoculars, long-range combat and quest progression.
GSC Game World recommends the default A-Life preset because increasing the range can affect performance and stability. Alongside the new features, the patch addresses missing PS5 quest characters and DLC access problems on SteamOS and GeForce NOW.
What the new A-Life distance setting changes
A-Life covers the stalkers and mutants going about their lives in the Zone, including encounters outside scripted quests. In August’s Update 2.0, GSC added more gathering points for those inhabitants and described stalkers looting bodies even when the player was elsewhere.
To change how far away those NPCs appear, open Settings > Game > Visualisation options and select a preset. Available choices can differ between PC and consoles. Dynamic adjusts the range automatically to suit the hardware.
GSC distinguishes roaming A-Life NPCs from quest and scripted characters. The increased range mainly applies to the A-Life group, so players should not expect every mission character to become visible at the same distance.
Binoculars, introduced in Update 2.0, now support the increased streaming distances and identify targets farther away when that setting is raised. GSC has also adjusted weapon ballistics for longer-range combat and extended how far away firefights can be heard, depending on the selected preset.
Other combat fixes address excessive NPC or mutant spawning at Rostok and mercenary spawning at Duga. The patch also tackles NPCs getting stuck while looting bodies or continuing to move during dialogue.
Squad leaders offer local fast travel
Friendly or neutral squad leaders are marked on the compass. Speak to one to see which destinations that squad can offer. The service costs money and only covers nearby places the player has already explored along the squad’s own route.
Discovering a location is therefore only part of the requirement: it also has to be on that leader’s route. The service cannot be used while overloaded. GSC illustrates the distance limit with a stalker in Zalissya: finding a guide there will not get you a ride all the way to Prypiat.
Performance and DLC access fixes
GSC lists fixes for performance drops at Perimeter Dam during To the Origins of Freedom and at Underpass Exit during Dangerous Way. Other entries address an inactive Faraday anomaly still rendering on the GPU, plus a memory leak and unresponsive map caused by large numbers of markers.
For SteamOS users, the patch addresses DLC and add-ons failing to apply on the first launch. GeForce NOW receives a separate fix for users unable to launch DLC.
GSC also lists fixes for the Margach D-12MT’s scope marker with FSR Frame Generation and for blurry textures on several scopes while aiming.
If performance or stability problems begin after installing The Zone Lookout, GSC recommends disabling mods. Players who continue to encounter problems can contact the studio’s technical support service. GTR has not independently benchmarked the new distance presets.
PS5 fixes target missing quest characters
GSC lists fixes for characters missing on PS5 after Update 2.0, including Varan during Deal With the Devil and Squint during A Needle in a Haystack. Other entries cover Scar and his squad during The Assault on the Duga and Sava during Hot on the Trail.
