Game Science has released 15 minutes of Black Myth: Zhong Kui gameplay, giving the first extended look at the second Black Myth game in action. The footage shows Zhong Kui fighting regular enemies and a large boss, alongside exploration and story scenes. Game Science says the game is still in early development and that the work-in-progress footage may differ from the final release.
The trailer also shows how Zhong Kui may play differently from Black Myth: Wukong. In the footage, the new protagonist fights with a bladed weapon, with repeated clashes at close range and several exchanges that look built around carefully timed blocks and counters. Game Science has not yet explained those mechanics in detail.
Zhong Kui’s combat looks different, but the systems are still experimental
A large part of the 15-minute video is spent in combat. Zhong Kui fights groups of enemies while moving through wooded and flooded areas, with blades repeatedly meeting during close-range exchanges. Those fights look noticeably different from the staff-based combat in Black Myth: Wukong, although Game Science has not yet explained the new combat system in detail.
Several exchanges look parry-like, but the studio has not formally named or explained a parry mechanic. Later in the boss battle, another fighter joins Zhong Kui and the footage appears to shift control briefly, but Game Science has not detailed how that sequence works either.
The trailer also includes a raft sequence, underwater movement and traversal between fights. One scene shows Zhong Kui travelling with an older man before entering the water, while another shifts back into combat against creatures in the surrounding landscape. Those sections also show more of the world around the fights, rather than cutting straight from one combat encounter to the next.
Zhong Kui is the second Black Myth title
Game Science describes Black Myth: Zhong Kui as the second title in the Black Myth series. It remains a single-player action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology and folklore, but the studio has not described it as a direct continuation of Black Myth: Wukong’s story.
When Zhong Kui was announced in August 2025, development was still so early that Game Science had no in-game footage ready to show. The studio said it wanted to preserve elements players liked in the first Black Myth while experimenting with new ideas, including gameplay designed around a different protagonist.
The August 2026 trailer is the first substantial gameplay look at that work. Game Science says some of what it is exploring remains experimental, so the combat interactions and other systems shown in the video should not yet be treated as final.
Black Myth: Zhong Kui still has no release date
Game Science says the new footage was captured in-game from a work-in-progress build running at a 21:9 aspect ratio. The studio also warns that the final release may differ from what is shown in the trailer.
There is still no release date or release window. Game Science currently lists PC and “major consoles” as target platforms and says final platform information will be confirmed before release.
The new trailer answers the biggest question left by the 2025 reveal — what Black Myth: Zhong Kui actually looks like in motion — but not when players will be able to play it.
