Path of Exile 2 shader fixes are now available through a combination of the game’s 0.5.4e patch and NVIDIA GeForce driver 610.88. Grinding Gear Games says the updates target two persistent PC problems: unusually slow shader loading and the “Device Removed” freezes reported by affected NVIDIA users.
The recommended sequence is to update the graphics driver, restart the game so patch 0.5.4e is applied, and then allow time for the shader cache to rebuild. Loading may initially be slower because the update requires shaders to be compiled again, but the developer says performance should settle after the relevant areas, effects, monsters, and mechanics have been encountered.
What Path of Exile 2 players need to update
Grinding Gear Games directs affected NVIDIA users to GeForce driver 610.88. The studio says the Device Removed problem affected NVIDIA graphics cards using driver branches newer than version 560 and identifies 610.88 as the current release containing the correction.
Players also need the Path of Exile 2 0.5.4e update. The patch was deployed without a server restart, which means the client must be restarted before the changes are downloaded and applied.
- Install NVIDIA GeForce driver 610.88 on an affected NVIDIA system.
- Restart Path of Exile 2 to receive patch 0.5.4e.
- Allow the game to rebuild its shader cache during normal play.
- Expect some areas and effects to load more slowly the first time after updating.
- Submit a bug report with system details if the same crashes continue.
Patch 0.5.4e improves shader loading and storage
The game patch contains several renderer and shader changes beyond the NVIDIA driver correction. Grinding Gear Games says shader loading times have been significantly improved and the size of shader files has been reduced.
The patch also fixes slow shader loading after the Vulkan renderer recovers from a GPU crash. That is a game-side correction and is separate from the Device Removed fix delivered through the NVIDIA driver.
Steam users receive another Vulkan-related change. Grinding Gear Games disabled the Fossilize Vulkan layer for the Steam version because it could allow Steam’s shader cache to grow to an immense size. This should reduce the risk of an abnormally large cache accumulating through that layer.
Locked is now the default VSync setting as well. The developer says the Adaptive method has frame-pacing problems and is no longer recommended.
Why loading can be slower immediately after the patch
Patch 0.5.4e requires the existing shaders to be recompiled. As a result, the first session after updating is not a reliable measure of the final improvement.
Players may see longer loading screens when entering an area for the first time or when the game encounters an effect that has not yet been added to the rebuilt cache. The same process can happen across multiple maps and mechanics rather than being completed during one initial loading screen.
Grinding Gear Games says performance should settle into a better state once the cache has been rebuilt. Players therefore should not immediately delete the new cache or change multiple renderer settings while the expected recompilation is still taking place.
NVIDIA driver 610.88 targets the Device Removed crashes
The game update and the NVIDIA driver handle different parts of the problem. Patch 0.5.4e improves shader loading, cache behavior and Vulkan recovery inside Path of Exile 2, while GeForce driver 610.88 contains the NVIDIA-side correction for the Device Removed freezes.
NVIDIA driver 610.88 also adds Game Ready support for Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day and Mistfall Hunter. Path of Exile 2 players, however, should install both the driver and the game patch before judging whether the specific shader and crash issues have been resolved.
What the fixes do and do not guarantee
The announcement targets the long-standing shader-loading issue and the Device Removed freezes associated with affected NVIDIA driver versions. It does not state that every possible Path of Exile 2 crash, stutter, network interruption, hardware fault, or unrelated renderer problem has been eliminated.
Players who continue to see the same symptoms after installing both updates should record their graphics card, driver version, renderer, operating system, and relevant logs. Grinding Gear Games asks affected users to submit those details through the official Bug Reports forum so remaining cases can be investigated.
For the defined problem, the official path is now clear: install NVIDIA driver 610.88, apply Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.4e, and give the game enough time to rebuild its shader cache before evaluating the result.
