GTA 6 Preorders Reached an Estimated $260 Million in First Week

Newzoo estimates GTA 6 generated about $260 million in global first-week preorders, while its $3.25 billion to $5.2 billion launch-week range remains a forecast.

Grand Theft Auto VI generated an estimated $180 million in digital pre-order spending across the United States and five major European markets during the final week of June, according to Newzoo. The games market research firm says that is the strongest opening week for a pre-order campaign recorded in its dataset.

Newzoo extrapolates that regional total to roughly $260 million worldwide. Its modelling then places GTA VI on a broad path toward $3.25 billion to $5.2 billion in cumulative global sales by the end of launch week. Those larger figures are forecasts built from historical sales curves, however, not confirmed orders or guaranteed launch results.

What Newzoo’s first-week data actually measures

The measured part of the analysis covers digital spending in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain during the final week of June. Newzoo attributes the figure to its Game Performance Monitor, which tracks PC and console performance data across thousands of games and dozens of markets.

That distinction matters because the widely repeated $260 million number is not a direct count of every GTA VI pre-order worldwide. Newzoo starts with approximately $180 million observed in those six markets, then uses the lifetime console player distribution of Grand Theft Auto V to estimate the share represented by the rest of the world.

According to the firm, about 69% of GTA V’s lifetime console audience sits inside those six measured markets. Applying that ratio produces the estimated $260 million global opening. Newzoo describes the result as the strongest start to a pre-order campaign in its dataset, while also rejecting social-media claims that GTA VI had already generated $1 billion in pre-orders.

How the estimate becomes a 37 million to 51 million unit range

The next step is based on sales-curve modelling. Newzoo compares major releases with three broad patterns: a new intellectual property that accelerates after reviews, a sequel whose performance remains uncertain, and a proven sequel with an established audience that commits earlier.

Newzoo considers the proven-sequel curve the closest baseline for GTA VI. In that model, the opening week of pre-orders represents about 5.8% of cumulative revenue booked by the end of launch week. Starting from the estimated $260 million opening and assuming an average selling price of $88, the model reaches approximately $4.5 billion and 51 million units by the end of launch week.

The firm also tests a more heavily front-loaded scenario in which the opening week already represents around 8% of the eventual launch-week total. That produces a more conservative estimate of about $3.25 billion and 37 million units. Newzoo’s broader plausible revenue band extends as high as $5.2 billion, depending on which historical curve most closely matches buyer behaviour.

Why the launch-week numbers remain forecasts

The 37 million to 51 million range should not be read as sales that have already happened. It depends on several assumptions: the regional extrapolation from six markets, the historical curve selected for comparison, how heavily demand is concentrated at the start of the pre-order window, and the assumed average selling price.

GTA VI also does not fit perfectly into an annualised franchise model. Newzoo argues that more than a decade of pent-up demand could push committed buyers to order early, but the series lacks the habitual yearly repurchase pattern seen in franchises such as EA Sports FC. Those opposing forces are why the firm presents a range rather than a single guaranteed outcome.

The useful signal is the verified opening within Newzoo’s own dataset: roughly $180 million in six tracked markets and an estimated $260 million globally. Everything beyond that is a scenario for how the campaign may develop between now and release.

Pre-orders opened months before the November launch

Rockstar Games opened Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders on June 25, giving the campaign a long runway before the game’s scheduled November 19, 2026 release. That timing makes the first-week result notable, but it also leaves substantial room for the revenue curve to change as Rockstar releases more marketing material and launch approaches.

Future measured updates will show whether spending continues to resemble Newzoo’s proven-sequel model or becomes more front-loaded than the historical comparisons. For now, the strongest conclusion is narrower than the biggest headlines: GTA VI began with the largest first-week pre-order campaign Newzoo has recorded, while the multi-billion-dollar launch figures remain data-driven projections rather than completed sales.
