Update — July 25, 2026: PlayStation has confirmed that God of War Laufey will launch for PS5 on February 16, 2027. Santa Monica Studio separately shared the same date through its official channels.
The announcement supersedes the earlier release-date status described in the original article below. The physical-disc confirmation remains unchanged, while pricing, preorder details, available editions, and regional availability have not yet been announced.
Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Laufey will be available on a physical disc for PlayStation 5. The brief statement removes concerns that the next mainline God of War game could launch as a digital-only release.
At the time of the original publication, the physical-disc confirmation did not reveal when the game would arrive. PlayStation listed the release date as “to be determined,” while pricing, preorder details, and available editions remained unannounced.
God of War Laufey will receive a physical PS5 release
Santa Monica Studio confirmed the physical edition directly through the game’s official social media account, stating that God of War Laufey will be available on disc.
The studio has not said whether the physical version will include the complete game on the disc, whether multiple discs will be required, or whether separate standard and collector’s editions are planned.
What was known before the release date announcement
When the original article was published, PlayStation listed God of War Laufey as an announced PS5 title with no firm release date. Players could add the game to their wishlists, but preorders had not opened.
At that stage, reports assigning the game a specific month or confirmed 2027 release date were not supported by a formal announcement. That changed on July 25, when PlayStation officially announced the February 16, 2027 launch date.
More release information is expected closer to launch, including available editions, pricing, preorder bonuses, and whether the physical version will be offered worldwide.
God of War Laufey follows Faye through the Everywhen
God of War Laufey is the next mainline entry in the God of War series and places Laufey, better known as Faye, in the lead role. Faye is the wife of Kratos, the mother of Atreus, and a legendary Giant whose actions shaped the events of God of War and God of War Ragnarök.
The story begins after Faye’s death, when she awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from different mythologies compete for power. She discovers that the plans she left behind to protect Kratos and Atreus are in danger and must fight to preserve them.
Gameplay focuses on Faye’s speed, precision, Giant magic, and soul-manipulation abilities. PlayStation describes the title as a standalone adventure, meaning players will not be required to finish the previous God of War games before starting it.
The physical-disc confirmation answers one important question for collectors and players who prefer boxed games. The exact release date is now confirmed, while pricing, preorder bonuses, available editions, and the physical release’s regional availability remain unanswered.
