Witcher modders add Geralt’s newest sword to The Witcher 3 almost as soon as CD Projekt pulled back the curtain on the game’s next expansion, Songs of the Past. Within hours of the reveal, a fan-made weapon inspired by the promotional artwork was already available in the base game, giving players an early look at the blade Geralt is shown holding.
A fast turnaround from the modding scene
CD Projekt confirmed the long-rumoured expansion on May 27, alongside new artwork featuring Geralt and the sword. Veteran REDkit modder Merigoldmaribor quickly used that image as the basis for a new weapon mod, and described the project as a small celebration of the announcement.
The mod went live on Nexus Mods at 5:41 PM UK time on the same day as the reveal. That kind of speed is a good reminder of how quickly the Witcher 3 modding community can react when CD Projekt shows something new.
What the sword changes
This is a recreation inspired by the promotional art, rather than a confirmed in-game asset from the expansion itself. Even so, it captures the same general look, including a more decorative guard than the standard Witcher steel swords.
The mod replaces the Wolf School steel swords with the new weapon and its scabbard, making it easy to slot into an existing playthrough.
- Inspired by the Songs of the Past promo art
- Replaces the Wolf School steel swords
- Includes the sword and scabbard
- Available on Nexus Mods
How it fits into Witcher 3
The design is more ornate than Geralt’s usual practical gear, but it does not obviously point to a specific setting for the expansion. It sits somewhere between the grounded look of the base game’s swords and the fancier weapons seen in Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone.
For players who want to stay ahead of the DLC, CD Projekt has already said that Songs of the Past will raise The Witcher 3’s minimum system requirements. That makes it sensible to check your setup if you are planning to return when the expansion arrives.
And for Cyberpunk fans?
CD Projekt’s other big RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, is not getting the same kind of surprise expansion treatment. Earlier this year, the studio ruled out any more unexpected DLC for that game.
