Sony has unveiled a new God of War game, but PC players probably should not expect to see this one arrive on the platform any time soon. Revealed during today’s State of Play, God of War Laufey appears to mark a return to PlayStation-first release plans for one of Sony’s biggest single-player franchises.
A new God of War centered on Faye
This time, the focus shifts away from Kratos and onto his late wife, Faye. According to Santa Monica Studio, the story begins after her burial rites, when her body manifests in the afterlife.
The setup sends her into the Everywhen, described as an afterlife ruled by gods from across mythology and filled with dangerous magic. Sony and Santa Monica are pitching it as a fight for survival in a land where power is constantly up for grabs.
Why PC players may be left waiting
The original God of War on PS4, along with God of War Ragnarok and God of War Valhalla, all eventually made their way to PC. That run of ports suggested Sony was warming to the idea of bringing its major single-player games beyond PlayStation.
But that direction may be changing again. Reports of internal communications have pointed to Sony scaling back PC releases for its biggest single-player exclusives, even as it keeps supporting multiplayer titles on the platform.
- Likely on PlayStation 5: Sony says the game is coming soon to PS5.
- PC release looks unlikely: Sony’s recent stance suggests a future port is not something to count on right now.
- No release date yet: Sony has not announced when the game will launch.
What this means for Sony’s release strategy
The shift fits a broader pattern in Sony’s current approach. Multiplayer games continue to head to PC, helped by the strong performance of titles like Helldivers 2. Big narrative-driven exclusives, though, appear to be moving back toward being system sellers for PlayStation hardware.
That does not guarantee God of War Laufey will never reach PC, but for now the signs point in the other direction. In practical terms, PlayStation 5 looks like the only confirmed home for the game at launch.
Another major console launch to keep an eye on
The timing also places Sony’s announcement alongside another high-profile console-only release: Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar has announced that game for Xbox and PlayStation first, with no PC date confirmed.
For now, God of War Laufey is simply listed as “coming soon” to PS5. That leaves PC players waiting once again, even after Sony’s recent history of porting the series to Windows.
