God of War is heading into a new chapter with the reveal of God of War Laufey, the next mainline entry in Santa Monica Studio’s series. The game puts Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, at the center of the story after a strange awakening in the afterlife of the gods.
Faye takes the lead
Rather than returning to Kratos, this story focuses on Laufey, also known as Faye, a character who has already played an important role in the Norse saga. Santa Monica Studio says the game will explore her strength, humanity, and flaws while showing more of the person behind the legacy.
The setup is straightforward but dramatic: after her funeral, Faye wakes in a strange place and finds that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are now in danger. To keep her family safe, she has to fight her way through a dangerous realm called the Everywhen.
The Everywhen and its threat
The Everywhen is described as an afterlife where magic returns to its source. It is also a place where gods and creatures from different mythologies cross paths, often violently. That means Faye is not just dealing with one pantheon, but a much broader and more unpredictable world.
Santa Monica Studio has already shown a brief look at two of the gods she will face there: Sekhmet and Begtse. Both are presented as hostile forces, and Faye quickly learns that surviving the realm may be easier than escaping it.
- Faye wakes after her funeral in the Everywhen
- Her goal is to protect Kratos and Atreus
- The realm mixes gods and creatures from different mythologies
- Sekhmet and Begtse are among the enemies shown so far
Combat built around speed and control
Santa Monica Studio says the goal was to keep the core identity of God of War intact while giving Faye a distinct feel. That means intimate, brutal combat, strong exploration, and story-driven progression remain central.
Her fighting style leans heavily on momentum. The studio describes it as fast, fluid, and relentless, with attacks that can flow across the ground or into the air. The team also says it has drawn from both the older Greek-era games and the newer Norse approach to world building and character focus.
Faye’s powers and companions
As the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, Faye has access to soul-based abilities that become even stronger in the Everywhen. One of the more striking abilities shown is her ability to separate an enemy’s soul from its body and attack it directly.
She will not be alone on this journey. Deborah Ann Woll returns as Faye, joined by Jack Quaid as Phranque, a cosmic cube with a protective streak, and Perlina Lau as Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian carrying a powerful sword. Together, they will face enemies drawn from mythology as well as beings native to the Everywhen.
What Santa Monica Studio is teasing next
The announcement also points to a wider creative plan for the franchise. Cory Barlog and Game Director Ariel Lawrence took part in an extended interview about how the idea for a Faye-focused game came together and where the team sees the series going next.
For now, Santa Monica Studio says it will share more details as release gets closer. The reveal makes one thing clear: God of War Laufey is not a side story, but a full new chapter built around a character fans have long wanted to see explored in more depth.
