IO Interactive has outlined how 007 First Light will make use of PlayStation 5 Pro’s upgraded PSSR upscaling at launch, and the pitch is straightforward: a cleaner, steadier image with sharper detail across the game’s environments and cinematic character work. On PS5 Pro, the new upscaler will be enabled by default, while other platforms will continue to use FSR 3.1.5.

What PS5 Pro players get

Upgraded PSSR is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s machine-learning-based upscaling tech, designed to reconstruct a sharper image from a lower internal resolution. In IO Interactive’s testing, it delivered a noticeable improvement across 007 First Light, especially in scenes that tend to expose the weaknesses of upscalers.

The studio says the biggest gains show up in outdoor areas with dense foliage, close-up character shots, and other visually busy moments where shimmer and instability can stand out.

Cleaner image, less shimmer

The developer highlights three main benefits from the new upscaler:

  • Less shimmering and flicker in fine geometric detail
  • Better temporal stability when the camera is moving or the player is sprinting through an area
  • Sharper reconstruction of hair, fabric, and other small details

That matters because 007 First Light appears to lean heavily on character presentation and cinematic framing, where unstable edges or noisy detail can be especially noticeable.

Fast integration for IO Interactive

One of the more interesting parts of the update is how quickly the studio says it got good results. IO Interactive says its engineers integrated upgraded PSSR in about a day, and the output was strong enough that no per-scene tuning was needed across the game’s varied locations and lighting conditions.

For developers, that suggests the upscaler may be relatively easy to adopt. For players, the practical impact is a smoother visual presentation without any extra setup on PS5 Pro.

What remains platform-dependent

The announcement is specific about launch behavior on PS5 Pro, but it does not break down any broader performance differences beyond image quality. The main takeaway is simply that 007 First Light will use upgraded PSSR by default on Sony’s mid-cycle console, while other platforms stick with FSR 3.1.5.

IO Interactive says it will continue looking for ways to improve image quality as the platform and its tools evolve, so this may not be the final word on the game’s visual options.
