IO Interactive has responded to an early leak of 007 First Light by releasing the opening 13 minutes itself. The move gives players an official look at the game’s first mission after footage surfaced online over the weekend and was quickly pulled down. The clip also arrives with a clear warning for anyone who wants to go in blind: this is spoiler territory.
What the opening shows
The sequence starts with a military helicopter carrying a group of soldiers on what appears to be an operation of some kind. That mission goes wrong fast, the helicopter is attacked, and Bond ends up in the ocean near the coast of Iceland after the crash.
From there, the footage leans more toward atmosphere than spectacle. Bond is shown moving through rocky terrain in miserable weather, with the early gameplay focused mostly on slow traversal and a bit of stealth. There is also a small interaction with his radio, which gives the player a chance to check in on the action.
Why IO chose to release it
The leak created a familiar problem for any major game on the eve of launch: if footage is already circulating, the publisher risks losing control of how the game is first presented. By putting out the opening section themselves, IO keeps the attention on an official upload instead of letting a random clip define the first impression.
That matters because the first few minutes do not exactly play like a flashy Bond trailer. The segment is deliberately restrained, and it does not yet show the sort of high-intensity espionage action many players will likely expect later in the game.
What players should know
The footage is only a short slice of the full game, so it should not be read as the whole experience. Still, it does give a useful sense of the tone IO is aiming for at the start.
- The opening mission begins with a helicopter operation that ends in a crash.
- Bond is left in the sea and makes his way along the Icelandic coast.
- The early gameplay shown is mostly slow movement, light stealth, and one radio interaction.
- IO released the clip after a leaked version circulated online and was removed.
Launch is close
007 First Light is due out on May 27, which means players will not have long to wait before seeing the full game for themselves. The release also marks the first non-mobile James Bond game in 14 years, following 007 Legends.
For now, the main takeaway is simple: IO has taken control of the conversation around the leak, and anyone curious about the opening mission can watch the official version rather than chase down unofficial uploads.
